چکیده

1. The absorption of radioactive cobalamin was measured by a whole-body counting technique in control subjects and in patients with pernicious anaemia. 2. The absorption of cyanocobalamin by patients with pernicious anaemia was decreased by charcoal but not by bile or saliva. 3. The absorption of cyanocobalamin by control subjects was not affected by food but was significantly increased by pentagastrin. With pentagastrin the absorption of cyanocobalamin was significantly greater than that of hydroxocobalamin. The hog intrinsic factor-mediated absorption of cyanocobalamin by patients with pernicious anaemia was significantly depressed by pentagastrin. 4. The effect of increasing the mass of hog intrinsic factor concentrate on the absorption of cyanocobalamin by patients with pernicious anaemia could be described by a function relating the amount absorbed, the mass of intrinsic factor and two constants. The relationship implies that when the mass of intrinsic factor is small the amount of cyanocobalamin absorbed is directly proportional to the mass of intrinsic factor but that absorption approaches a saturation value with increasing mass of intrinsic factor. In physiological terms the function implies that absorption is proportional to the amount of cyanocobalamin attached to receptor sites but that cyanocobalamin attached to receptor sites may become detached and either reattached or lost to absorption. 5. With oral doses of 25 pg and 50 pg, control subjects absorbed more cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin than patients with pernicious anaemia. At both dose levels control subjects absorbed more cyanocobalamin than hydroxocobalamin but no difference was observed in patients with pernicious anaemia. The intrinsic factor mechanism therefore influences amounts absorbed at such dose levels and appears to be a factor in the differences in absorption of cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin. 6. The use of double-tracer techniques makes it possible for each subject to act as Correspondence: Dr J. F. Adams, Department of Medicine, Southern General Hospital, Glasgow, S.W.l.

Vitamin D and the urgency of paying attention to this vital element in the body

Vitamin D is a vital element in the body that plays an important role in the growth and strength of muscles and bones by its effect on calcium absorption from the intestine. Vitamin D biosynthesis begins with the exposure to UV of sunlight from the skin. Cholecalciferol transfers from the skin and the intestine to the liver, and then binds to the DBP protein and eventually enters the kidney to...

Factors affecting the absorption of vitamin K-1 in vitro.

Factors which might affect the absorption of vitamin K of dietary origin were investigated using everted small bowel sacs. Increasing the bile salt concentration to 20 mM or the addition of long chain fatty acids, monoolein, or lecithin all resulted in significant (P less than 0-05) decrease in the absorption rate of the vitamin. The addition of 2-5 mM short and medium chain fatty acids did not...

The relationship between environmental factors and the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Iran

Vitamin D deficiency is one of the major health problems that is unexpectedly prevalent in Iran. The ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sunlight are the most important source of vitamin D in humans. In contrast, environmental factors are one of the reasons for decrease in UV transmission to the earth which results in the reduction of vitamin D absorption. Since the role of environmental factors has b...

Mechanisms involved in vitamin E transport by primary enterocytes and in vivo absorption.

It is generally believed that vitamin E is absorbed along with chylomicrons. However, we previously reported that human colon carcinoma Caco-2 cells use dual pathways, apolipoprotein B (apoB)-lipoproteins and HDLs, to transport vitamin E. Here, we used primary enterocytes and rodents to identify in vivo vitamin E absorption pathways. Uptake of [(3)H]alpha-tocopherol by primary rat and mouse ent...
